Continue Your Completed Save
Continue your existing Valor Mortis save after the final boss to revisit earlier regions and finish remaining quests, collectibles and upgrades. New Game Plus was absent at launch and announced for later in 2026; the October 27 update describes weapon additions and fixes without announcing the mode's release.
What the New Game Plus Announcement Promises
The October 27 update adds new critical attacks for the Rapier and Saber, alongside themed melee and ranged weapon skins. Those additions become available after installing the update. It does not announce a New Game Plus release.
How to Resume and Start Cleanup
- Choose Continue on the main menu to resume your existing playthrough. After the final boss, the game places you back near the final Lantern, ready to revisit earlier areas.
- Use a Lantern to fast travel to an earlier available Lantern. Pick a region containing something you still want to finish, so each return trip has a clear goal.
- Work through the remaining collectibles and side quests in that region before moving elsewhere. Post-story exploration also lets you continue working on upgrades and outstanding trophies or achievements.
- When you want to stop, choose Back to Menu from the pause menu to save where you are standing. Valor Mortis uses a single playthrough save rather than separate manual saves.
Choose a Goal for Post-Story Exploration
Most unfinished side quests can still be started and completed after the ending. Their rewards commonly include Amber or upgrade materials, making them useful for both collection and character improvements. Pick a particular unfinished quest as your reason to revisit an area, rather than retracing the entire campaign without a goal.
Amber hunting gives you another reason to revisit familiar routes. Collecting duplicates strengthens ranked Ambers, while equipping Ambers at Lanterns lets you adjust your setup. Choose an effect you want to improve, then focus your exploration on its pickup locations.
Ferrofluid upgrades remain collectible after the story. They improve your primary healing resource, although collecting them is not required for trophies or achievements. They are a practical cleanup target if you want stronger healing while exploring the areas you previously passed through.
Use Shield for Poison-Gated Cleanup
Shield allows you to cross poison areas, opening routes worth checking during cleanup. You obtain it through story progression at University > Main Hall. Return to poison-blocked paths you passed earlier with that ability available.
Find a Healing Upgrade from Main Hall
- Start at University > Main Hall and return to the place where you crossed the chandelier. Take the opposite direction through the poison hallway, then ride the next elevator down.
- In the lower library, go right into the large room with a statue. Pick up the item in front of the statue to remove the vines.
- Open the chest behind the statue to collect a Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade. You can make this cleanup trip before or after defeating the final boss.
The High Tower and Temporary Travel Restrictions
Post-story exploration lets you revisit earlier regions, but the temporary jail section has its own limitation. The Choir takes place in the jail during Chapter 10: Shackled and must be handled while that section is available. Its consumable reward is not required for trophies or achievements.
If you are reading ahead before finishing, the Fortress's High Tower leads into a stretch without fast travel. Finish your immediate exploration goals before climbing it, especially tasks involving the Mice. After the ending, you can return to earlier regions for regular cleanup, including remaining Eternal Guardsmen for The Oathbound.

Questions About Continuing After the Story
- Does finishing the story force me to restart?
- No. After the final boss, you return near the final Lantern and can revisit earlier areas to work on remaining collectibles, quests and trophies.
- Can I use New Game to begin New Game Plus?
- No. The ordinary New Game option starts a fresh save and overwrites your current progress. Keep your completed save if you want to continue post-story cleanup.
- What if a boss achievement failed to unlock?
- If you died at the same time as a boss and missed its achievement or trophy, install the update and press Continue on the main menu. The patch says affected unlocks should then be awarded.
