When Lantern fast travel unlocks
Lantern fast travel unlocks after the boss in Chapter 2, letting you travel between discovered destinations. You can revisit earlier regions after the ending, although the temporary prison area cannot be revisited once you leave it.
Unlock travel and choose a return destination
- Defeat the boss in Chapter 2 to unlock the fast-travel menu, which also shows Lantern names.
- Rekindle Lanterns as you reach them to establish your respawn point.
- Travel from an available Lantern to a discovered destination near your unfinished objective.
- Rest when you need Health and Nephtoglobin restored, remembering that resting also brings non-boss enemies back.

Abilities that open routes on a return visit
Grappling unlocks through story progression in Fallen Village, near Orchard. It lets you swing to Grapple Points and pull Nephtoglobin Blossoms to open paths.
Stasis is obtained in the Caverns and is useful for stopping moving platforms on return routes. Nephtoglobin Formations unlock near Ship Graveyard, letting you activate or deactivate structures that open routes.
Shield Transmutation comes from story progression at University — Main Hall. It allows you to cross poison areas and is the ability needed to continue The Emissary.
Return routes to try with your new abilities
- Ride the elevator near Valley of Ashes — Quarry to the upper level after unlocking Grappling; grapple points there provide a route across the area.
- Pull the crate beyond those grapple points to reach the upper area, where a Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade chest waits near the return zipline.
- Stop the moving box with Stasis in the Old Mine side route to create a crossing toward a Ferrofluid upgrade chest.
- Follow the route back through the carriage from Fallen Village — Marketplace, then left at the crossroads, with Grappling and Nephtoglobin platforms available; it leads to an Oathbound Guardsman.
- Cross the poison beyond Valley of Ashes — The Other Side with Shield Transmutation to continue The Emissary.
- Cross the poisoned route from The Outskirts — Harbour with Shield to reach the side dock and ship used by The King of Smugglers.
Shortcuts that make quest returns easier
- Kick down the ladder at the top of the Demolished Path route to reconnect with the earlier Lantern and the adjutant's carriage.
- Drop from the Old Mine return elevator onto the middle ledge to reach the body carrying the Mining Shaft Key.
- Use the Mining Shaft Key on the door beside the minecart-redirection switch to open the mining-shaft passage.
- Use the shortcut behind the man at Tribunal Square to return to the children when you have their storybook for Bedtime Stories.
Late-story spoilers: restricted Lanterns and postgame returns
Finish planned return trips before continuing beyond Fortress — High Tower. The following Napoleon's Prison and Entropy stretch has no fast travel, interrupting Lantern trips back to earlier quests.
| Region and Lantern | Nearby objective and travel restriction |
|---|---|
| Napoleon's Prison — Prison | Armoury Key, Key to the Chapel and The Forgotten Fortune; no fast travel |
| Napoleon's Prison — Burning City | Nearby chest and mouse hole; no fast travel |
Complete The Choir and The Forgotten Fortune before leaving Napoleon's Prison, because you cannot return there. Entropy has no named Lantern.
After the ending, you are placed back near the final Lantern and can revisit earlier regions for remaining collectibles and side quests. The temporary prison remains the exception, so handle its quests during your visit.
