Complete the trail through the poison camp
To complete The Emissary in Valor Mortis, collect the Emissary’s Seal and Emissary’s Letter, then return to the camp near Valley of Ashes > The Other Side with Shield Transmutation. Investigate the body and inspect the red cloth by the blocked gate to finish the quest and receive a consumable; the camp also holds the Perfect Copy Amber.
Start at The Other Side and return with Shield
The Emissary begins in Chapter 2: Regroup, in the Valley of Ashes. From The Other Side Lantern, take the passage on the left into the poisonous fog and look for the carriage. The Emissary’s Seal is on a table inside, giving you the starting clue.
You need Shield Transmutation to explore the poison-hidden camp farther along this trail. Shield comes through story progression in the University, near the Main Hall Lantern: the library route takes you across a chandelier into a large room, where the ability is obtained at the top of the stairs. Continue the main story until you have it, then return to The Other Side.
Lantern fast travel becomes available after the boss in Chapter 2. Use it for the return trip once Shield is yours. For the camp cleanup, select Valley of Ashes > The Other Side.
Follow the Seal, Letter and camp interactions
- Collect the Emissary’s Seal from the table inside the carriage in the poison-filled passage left of Valley of Ashes > The Other Side. This begins the quest trail.
- Collect the Emissary’s Letter after the Slaughtermill fight in Vale of Wrath. From the platform, look on the ground to the right a short distance into the exit tunnel; Old Windmill is the associated Lantern.
- Obtain Shield Transmutation during the University story route. Its protection lets you cross the poison areas needed for the return visit.
- Use Shield to follow the poison-covered path downhill from Valley of Ashes > The Other Side. The path brings you into the hidden camp.
- Pick up the Incriminating Letter from the ground in the camp. Collect this clue before investigating the nearby body.
- Inspect the body beside the cannon in the camp. This interaction summons a Risen Soldier for a miniboss encounter.
- Defeat the enemy summoned by the corpse interaction. After the encounter, you can collect the camp’s Perfect Copy Amber from its chest.
- Shoot the weak spot in the train car near the poison. Destroying it opens the passage farther into the area toward the blocked gate.
- Inspect the red cloth beside the blocked gate beyond the train-car obstacle. This is the final interaction that completes The Emissary and grants its consumable reward.
Collect Perfect Copy before leaving
Open the chest in the camp’s tent to collect the Perfect Copy Amber. It increases the ranks of your other equipped Tier 1 and Tier 2 Ambers. You can equip Ambers through the level-up menu at a Lantern.
The chest pickup and quest completion are separate interactions. Collect Perfect Copy from the chest, then finish the trail at the red cloth beside the blocked gate. The Emissary has no dedicated quest achievement or reward-changing dialogue choice.
Get past the poison and train-car obstacle
If the poisonous fog stops your progress, continue the story until you obtain Shield in the University. The Seal can be found much earlier than the ability needed to finish the camp route. Return with Shield and use it to cross the poison.
If you cannot line up a shot on the train-car weak spot from the ground, climb to the area above the cliffs. Aim down toward the weak spot from there. Destroying it clears the passage near the poison so you can continue toward the final interaction.
If you have collected Perfect Copy but the quest remains active, continue to the blocked gate and inspect the red cloth. The Amber chest is a loot stop along the route. The red-cloth interaction is what finishes the quest.
Returning after the story
- Can I finish The Emissary after the story?
- Yes. The Emissary can still be started and completed after the story. Return to Valley of Ashes > The Other Side with Shield and follow the remaining camp interactions through to the red cloth by the blocked gate.
